7.8 percent fewer deaths in road transport by the end of August

Quotation: WIESBADEN – According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office, 433 people in Germany died in road traffic accidents in August 2006 and thus 15% less than in August last year. 36 700 people were injured, which is a decrease of 6.7% compared with August 2005. Overall, the police recorded around 179 300 road traffic accidents in August 2006, 0.1% less than in the same month of the previous year. The total number of road accidents recorded by the police in Germany during the period January to August 2006 fell by 1.0% to 1.44 million compared to the same period in the previous year, including 209 100 accidents (5.7%) in which at least one person was injured or killed, and 1.24 million accidents with only physical damage (- 0.1 %). In the first eight months of 2006, the number of people killed in road accidents fell by 7.8% to 3 260 compared to the same period last year, and the number of people injured fell by 5.8% to 269 600.
