Penalty instead of points deduction for Ferrari

The World Council of the World Association of Automobiles (FIA) has ended the “Teamorder affair”: The result of the Grand Prix of Austria remains, but the Ferrari team has to pay a drastic fine. Michael Schumacher will not be denied the victory at the Grand Prix of Austria. The World Council of the International Automobile Association (FIA) decided in Paris that Ferrari and its two drivers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello for the behavior on the S Iegerpodium, however, must jointly pay a penalty of one million dollars. Half of the sum will be suspended for one year and will be due only if such an incident should repeat itself within the next twelve months. Sanctions against the two drivers, however, is not possible because “both are contractually bound to carry out the instructions of the team”, the World Council of the International Automobile Association FIA decided according to its published in Paris Nevertheless, the World Council “regrets” the way in which the team orders had been given. Ferrari was also not punished for this with reference to the “traditional right of a team” to determine the ranking of its drivers. “With some reluctance” had therefore been removed from sanctions. Barrichello had clearly led at the Grand Prix of Austria on 12 May, but had to pass the second-placed Schumacher and win at the order of his team. Schumacher was accused of violating the rules because he had asked his teammate at the award ceremony and the then official FIA press conference in the middle. The behaviour on the winning podium was to be punished because “it is the duty of every team that the contracted drivers adhere to the podium procedures and not in any way break the national authorities of the country in which the Grand Prix takes place. On the podium, Schumacher first accepted the winner’s trophy from the hands of Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and then passed it on to Barrichello. Furthermore, the German had left the place on the top podium to the Brazilian.
