Defective power steering Punto II

Last week, my Punto (type 188) power steering failed. I was with the Fiat dealer and had the fault memory read out. He says the engine is defective. I had to convince the mechanic to look at the fuses, but they were ok. Price of a new material 788 € incl. VAT + installation. Then I went to my free workshop, where the car is usually serviced. I had seen in the WWW that an online dealer had the engine But my workshop had probably re-informed itself at three Fiat workshops, all of which unanimously said that it would only be worth changing the engine and control unit, because there might be communication difficulties. In other words, it would be lucky if it worked afterwards. What about it, who has experience of just changing the engine?
