TÜV Nord: Additional ECUs for E85 fuel are subject to approval

(Source: TÜV Nord) Additional control units for E85 fuel are subject to authorisation Due to constantly increasing petrol and diesel prices, there is an increased demand for alternative fuels, such as E85. E85 fuel consists of 85% (bio)ethanol and 15% from petrol and is exempt from the mineral oil tax in Germany until 2015. Bioethanol is produced from renewable biomass, e.g. from sugar beet, potatoes or cereals, in Brazil from sugar cane and in Swede E85 has a higher octane number than petrol, but the energy content is about one third lower. Therefore, a special additional control unit is required for operation with E85. The installation of an E85 additional control unit is only permitted if there is an EC system approval, an ABE or a part report available for this purpose and the conditions and restrictions mentioned there – e.g. an amendment assessment – are complied with. A positive individual assessment according to § 21 StVZO i.V.m. § 19 (2) StVZO without test certificate is possible if: 1. a positive EMC test or an EC system approval is available for the E85 additional control unit. 2. a positive exhaust gas test is available for the vehicle, which shows that o the exhaust gas behaviour does not deteriorate due to the conversion and o for OBD vehicles during operation with the E85 additional control unit all required OBD radio 3. for the vehicle there is an engine power record with E85 fuel. If the engine power changes by more than 5%, engine power, maximum speed and noise values have to be redefined. We want you to be always well informed!
