Bad winter tires?!

Hello together, I had recently the following incident. My girlfriend and I are with my R230 Mopf2 for skiing to St. Anton. The car was quite packed, but we had no skis with us. The problem now occurred on the Arlberg pass (if one of you should know that is such a pretty steep pass road that leads to St. Anton. However, there is still a paid tunnel, from which we only learned later.) Now it had snowed pretty much and the Str. ate was not completely cleared. I thought, as they all shot up, it will not be a problem if I drive slowly.. Wrong thought, sometime in the middle of this pass road did not go any further. We stood in the curve and have slipped further and further away. That was quite slow because the steep slope was very close… The snow cleaner behind us then recommended us to turn around and take the tunnel. This was then no problem. Now my question: What w I had winter tires from Continental, which were only put on by my MB workshop shortly before. And I have to say there are cars shot up and have overtaken me, I thought I was in the wrong movie! Everything from new 3s, 5s bmws over off-road cars to an old duck!! which apparently had no problems either… ) After that I was in my workshop and told them to watch the tires. Then the master said the Pro fil would still be 1A, but the tires were already 4 years old. He had it then that they changed their characteristics over time? Now I have completely new Pirelli tires on it and have a really good feeling up to now, where I still did not enjoy to drive up such a smooth and steep road. The tires of course had their price. Now the father of my girlfriend said that I would have been better served if I had 4 50kg heavy sandbags in the trunk Well what do you think? What might be the reason for this? MfG and good driving
