Munich is expecting a declining demand for the long-distance version of the small car, after the range of the pure battery variant has increased to up to 260 kilometers in the course of the current battery upgrade. Nevertheless, in Germany about one in four customers decided to drive without fear of range. In the USA and Japan, however, the range extender share is significantly higher; therefore, the i3 will continue to be offered with an internal combustion engine.
