BMW cuts the range extender for Europe at i3

Munich – BMW says goodbye to the range extender in the electric car i3. The version with the 0.65 litre engine, which can charge the battery during the ride, is taken out of the program in Europe. Munich is expecting a declining demand for the long-distance version of the small car, after the range of the pure battery variant has increased to up to 260 kilometers in the course of the current battery upgrade. In addition, the grid of fast charging stations in Europe is growing continuously Compared to the pure battery version, the model with an additional engine cost up to 4,600 euros extra charge. Nevertheless, in Germany about one in four customers decided to drive without fear of range. In the USA and Japan, however, the range extender share is significantly higher; therefore, the i3 will continue to be offered with an internal combustion engine.
