Why “Y”? – From Model S to Model Y

Hello all, I would like to describe here again a bit more in detail (edit: ok, was a little longer) than in the waiting room, which triggered the change and the decision for the model Y Performance. Maybe one or the other is facing a similar situation…- What was – Our main vehicle in the family has been electric since a fatal test drive in 2016. Lack of alternatives there was only the model S90D then, which our needs in range, charging In 2019 we had to decide again what the successor should be for the vehicle. It was clear that he had to be completely electric again, the return to the burner was excluded due to the positive e-experiences of the previous years and also off the main vehicle we are working to get the last verb The test drive with the toughest competitor at this time with four rings (detailed report here) ended with the signing of a new leasing contract for a Model S Long Range. This could again be a few things better than the predecessor and accompanies us reliably on all trips and in everyday life until today. At the same time, I would like to mention explicitly that in the past 6 years Tesla’s fault rate was below and the service (if necessary) above that of the previous vehicles with stars and rings. This is not representative, but personal experience. – What is – 3 years already around again? Hard to believe, but also this year the change is on again…and the decision was not easier for various reasons. First of all, I would like to mention that no vehicle and no manufacturer is perfect. Also at Tesla there are (subjective) points, which I like (drive/performance, range, charging network, software/app connectivity, OTA updates, steering assistance, space offer, reduced interior, warranty, dynamic of the company) those I would like to see better or that the competition can better (shield detection, rescue lane, suspension grinding, paint quality (US production), here and there the attention to detail – where the last point is to In the end there is always a personal balance and a compromise. So what are the alternatives on the market to replace our Model S? Well…the Model S Refresh! Even faster, even more range, an – as I think – beautifully upgraded interior, new headlights, seat ventilation and Co. – problem? Still not arrived in Europe yet and no schedule available. Since the Nac In addition, the almost 5m length and the stately width of the Model S are the point, which has often caused the desire for a somewhat more compact vehicle to come up…just when suddenly there was a scratch on the bumper or rims that no one could explain. So further: The little brother is already standing in front of the house as Model 3 SR+, makes his thing very good and lots of fun to drive, since he clearly has you ekter than the big ship Model S is and fits also in smaller parking spaces. However, the carried out suitcase test quickly revealed that it is simply not enough for the existing luggage volume to become the main touring vehicle, the small tailgate/the height of the trunk is – despite itself really much traffic volume – in this case the hook and does not reach the model S. So then just no Tesla anymore, gives after all enough choice, right? Well. In – subjective(!) – fastdurc The reasons for the exclusion of theoretically available models (with desired all-wheel) on the market: MB EQS: too long (5,21m), optics and with reasonable equipment/all-wheel at the absolute price pain limit; MB EQE: also too small tailgate, optics, not all variants available yet; Porsche Taycan/Audi e-tron GT: even deeper than the Model S, length about the same, too small tailgate, otherwise visually beautiful; BMW iX: optics (fat beaver); BMW i4: too heavy (+420kg to the TM3 LR), P/L agrees here for not me, space in the rear restricted; Audi E-tron: see reasons above; Audi Q4: interior is too heavily devalued compared to previous Audi interiors, material quality partly under Tesla, infotainment system (MIB) lame, currently no real OTA support, app connectivity unfortunately still as bad/unreliable as with our last Audi, driving performance compared weak; VW ID.4/Skoda Enyaq: driving performance, infotainment see Q4; KIA EV6: optics, driving performance (GT comes too late) Other potentially possible vehicles such as Q6, EQE SUV, Macan-e, Audi A6 e-tron or various newcomers are not yet available, could also bring unwanted surprises. And why did I write above only of “theoretically available models”? Because many of the mentioned vehicles unfortunately have delivery times, which let you slag with your ears. If you look around here in the forum, are sometimes already called delivery times up to the year 2024 (e.g. i4) or b. of course – at least in part – not only the manufacturers are responsible for this and it is due to the tense situation on the world market (chip shortage, raw material prices, Ukraine crisis), but if one needs a vehicle promptly, one – in addition to the above mentioned subjective aspects – actually only remains one vehicle, namely…- What comes – …the Model Y. It makes things better if space is increased With the Model 3 at its capacity limits, it is still more compact than the Model S, does not lose any storage space and brings with it the well-known Tesla focus points (software, drive and charging grid). In our case, when deciding between Long Range and Performance, the performance ultimately won, because the driving performance of the LR coming from the Model S LR would have been a small step backwards – but that is also subjective, of course, an LR is likely to be the most effective. I’m sure it’s also a point to mention: when it comes to costs, the Y (also when it comes to leasing) is very much lower than that of the Model S – clearly, other vehicle class, here and there a bit of a waiver, but the overall package fits for us and, as I said, a new Model S would not have been available at all. In the chosen color white, the fact that the door handles are so much better to recognize in the dark has played a role. s for black, which has been the color of choice for us for years. Maybe a little strange as a reason, but even with the chrome-plated door handles on the Model 3 it is sometimes not easy to recognize these in the dark by the black car – with black handles on white ground this should work better – apart from that I find that white is good for the Model Y – in combination with dark rims. That the performance at delivery is already safe “Made in Brandenb This is a small patriotic bonus, which is also good for the German Autoseele after 3 vehicles from USA and China, whereby I would ultimately make a vehicle decision dependent on the characteristics and not on the production site. Just to say: We are looking forward to the strong “Y” from Grünheide!
